Bradley Elementary School

Michaele Sommerville

My name is Michaele (pronounced ‘My-kul,” like Michael Jordan) Sommerville, and I will be your child’s kindergarten teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share this very special time in your child’s life!

This is my twenty-third year as a kindergarten teacher, having taught in Alaska, New Mexico, and Kansas (Geary County Schools and Ft. Leavenworth). I graduated from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and have actively continued my professional development while raising three children with my husband, a retired Army SGM. I am an advocate for children and for developmentally appropriate practice, maintaining professional memberships in NAEYC (the National Association for the Education of Young Children) and SITE (Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education). I was honored to be selected as our district's nominee for the 2012 Kansas Teacher of the Year Award.

I believe in building respectful, caring, and joyful relationships full of humor with my students and their families, as working together creates a wonderful kindergarten experience for all!  To support learning and make our classroom the place where students want to be, I facilitate multi-sensory learning activities that integrate math, science, social studies and language arts concepts, encourage students to creatively express their thoughts, feelings, and questions, and provide engaging literature for communication, literacy and comprehension development. With encouragement, guidance, patience, friendship, sharing and many opportunities for students to increase their intrinsic motivation, our Super Stars spend their kindergarten year exploring the world around them and developing the skills essential for their continued success.

I communicate with parents via weekly newsletters, a monthly activity calendar, e-mail, notes, phone calls, in-classroom conferences, and via our Twitter account: @KNGSuperStars.  Thank you for being my partner in your child's education!  Make sure to subscribe to our Super Stars' activity via the link to the right.

Please check your email for a link to an invitation from me to complete an online class information form.  It might have inadvertently been delivered somewhere other than your "in" box, so search your "junk," "spam" or "clutter" folders if this is the first time I've contacted you digitally.

We are going to have a great year!

Super Star Families,

Tomorrow, Tuesday, January 29, is Kansas Day!

Students may wear state-inspired clothing.  Sunflowers, Bradley Buffalo shirts, Kansas Chiefs, Royals, Jayhawks or Wildcat teams, or even farmer/cowboy/cowgirl styles are appropriate.

Have a great afternoon,

M.

PS: Remember to help your Star count out 100 items from home to add to our "How much is 100?" math display.  Weather permitting, our 100th day of kindergarten will be next Monday, February 4.

Happy 50th Day of School!

The Stars are looking forward to counting to 50 by 1s and 10s, listening to music from the 1950s, and attending a sock hop later this afternoon!

Sommerville Star Calendar AUG 2018

Parents, attached is our August calendar.  Events, special dates and curriculum content information is included.  A paper copy will be sent home with you in your child's yellow "parent communicator" folder on Monday during the "Meet the Teacher" visit.

The yellow folder should be checked by you each evening and returned to school the next day in your Star's backpack.
I'm looking forward to meeting you and our Super Star kindergartners next Monday!  Please label your child's resting mat, backpack, and paint (all other school items can remain unmarked) and bring them with you when you visit Bradley and our classroom from 2:00-3:30 p.m.

I will remain *seated* at our reading table during this visit in order to reduce your child's nervousness or anxiety as s/he helps you tour our classroom and sort school supplies into tubs and desk trays. If your student would like to introduce him/herself to me, I'm happy to chat, but if your little one prefers to watch me from afar (or from behind you!), please allow our Star to do so.  Gentle starts are a great way to begin our learning adventure.

Parents will be able to sign up for August's parent-teacher conferences during the first week of school.  A tutorial for accessing my conference schedule can be found by clicking here.
